Q:how to Plan MAIO and HSN

 For telecom engineers, it is very help full to know about MAIO. Basically there is a set of frequencies where the channels are hop to avoid interference that set of frequencies is called MA-LIST. suppose MALIST contained frequencies [A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L].
Then MAIO corresponds the starting point of hopping sequence. suppose there are four TRx in one sector. then MAIO will be, for example, 0,2,4.
for first TRx for traffic, the MAIO is 0. means that hopping sequence starts from first frequency in the MALIST, that is frequency A. and for MAIO 2 it starts from frequency C and for MAIO 4 it starts from frequency E.

Also HSN (hopping sequence number), ranges from 0 to 63 . if we use HSN as, for example 4 it means that for MAIO 0, the sequence starts from frequency A and repeats frequencies in following manner.

For MAIO 0 and HSN 4
A,F,K,D,I,B,G,L,E,J,C,H,A,F

For MAIO 2 and HSN 4
C,H,A,F,K,D,I,B,G,L,E,J,C,H

For MAIO 4 and HSN 4
E,J,C,H,A,F,K,D,I,B,G,L,E,J

  1. The test set offers two basic forms of frequency hopping algorithms: cyclic and pseudo random. When set to the cyclic form, the test set and the mobile station are cycled through a fixed repeated pattern of frequencies. There are a total of 64 different frequency patterns that the test set can generate and use. The hopping sequence the mobile station uses depends on the Hopping Sequence Number (HSN) specified in the test set. An HSN of zero corresponds to the cyclic hopping sequence, and values 1 through 63 correspond to the pseudo random patterns. The ARFCNs used in the hopping sequence pattern are determined by the contents of the test set's Mobile Allocation (MA) Table. The entry of the MA Table at which the hopping sequence begins is called the Mobile Allocation Index Offset (MAIO). Note that an MAIO of zero corresponds to the first entry of the MA Table.

    To check what has explained regarding the resulted MAI using HSN=4, you may generate simulation using dummy ordered frame number and available inputs. It should be randomized instead of cyclic one.

    There are many concept of designing radio networks with frequency hopping in term of hopping scheme selection which is affected to the design of HSN, MAIO, MALL length, etc. Hope your study not stopped at these basic parameters only.

    For a given set of parameters, the index to an absolute radio frequency channel number (ARFCN) within the mobile allocation (MAI from 0 to N‑1, where MAI=0 represents the lowest absolute radio frequency channel number (ARFCN) in the mobile allocation, ARFCN is in the range 0 to 7023 and the frequency value can be determined according to GSM 05.05 sec 2 with n= ARFCN), is obtained with the following algorithm:
    if HSN = 0 (cyclic hopping) then:
    MAI, integer (0 .. N‑1) : MAI = (FN + MAIO) modulo N
    else:
    M, integer (0 .. 152) : M = T2 + RNTABLE((HSN xor T1R) + T3)
    S, integer (0 .. N‑1) : M' = M modulo (2 ^ NBIN)
    T' = T3 modulo (2 ^ NBIN)
    if M' < N then:
    S = M'
    else:
    S = (M'+T') modulo N
    MAI, integer (0 .. N‑1) : MAI = (S + MAIO) modulo N
    NOTE: Due to the procedure used by the mobile for measurement reporting when DTX is used, the use of cyclic hopping where (N)mod 13 = 0 should be avoided.

    I dont think that this HSN planning explanation is right. What will happen if we have HSN = 20 in a MAL with 21 freq? the sequence will repeat the same frequency all the time? It doesnt make sense!!!
